Anything I want to say about Magic

Polly wants a cracker

Sometimes you don’t need to build a new deck from scratch. Sometimes there’s one waiting inside another deck – of yours, of a friend, or of a list you saw online. Today I tell the story of the deck hiding inside Mono Green Lockdown. Continue reading

Learning from a little red Llurgoyf

Today marks the first day I’m really scrabbling for a subject to write about. Not having played a game of Magic of about three weeks hasn’t helped matters, either – most of the times, inspiration comes from playing with the cards. The last time I touched cards was when goldfishing with my Walking Dead Flare-deck from last week. Then I remembered that I wrote several times about a deck I built a while ago, but never gave the deck the attention it deserved. My most aggressive deck in recent years (I kid you not) was something I don’t have to hide. As a matter of fact, I’m sharing it with you here today! Continue reading

The Royal Wave

Welcome back, my dearest readers, to my weekly Magic column. Last week I wrote about the interesting cards on the Card Image Gallery (seriously, what happened to the Visual Spoiler?) as of last Wednesday. This was because I spent my weekend in Italy, watching Formula 1-cars and other high-speed four-wheelers drive by at insane speeds. When I wasn’t at the track in Monza, I was shuffling around with the ofEmpires-deck I talked about two weeks ago. Today, I’d like to tell more about that. Continue reading

For Rick

Alternate title: how to find joy in the things that restrict you (and how restriction isn’t limiting at all)

For years now, Rick is my best friend. We met through a mutual Magic-playing friend who we both knew independently. While he faded away from Magic, Rick stuck around in my local playing ground, and therefore in my circle of friends. He’s been there ever since. He can be a bit stubborn at times, however. That is why I’m dedicating this next deck to him. And just by those words, he will know enough. For those that don’t know (which is everyone but him and me), I give you four words: Peasant Squirrel Nest abuse. Continue reading

New Phyrexia, Old Decks

Hi all and welcome back to another installment of my writing attempts. This week I want to take a look at the New Phyrexia spoilers, a lot of cards which we’ll be seeing in flesh for the first time tomorrow. At least I am! However, my article today will not be a 1 to 175 card-by-card set review. Instead, I’d like to focus on the cards that got me excited, cards that can supplement old decks or cards that will inspire new ones. Strap your goggles on real tight, ’cause we’re diving straight in! Continue reading

Sisters of Life and Death

The moment I spotted Glissa, the Traitor on the visual spoiler, I was sold. My weakness for all things legendary combined with my instinctual inclination towards card-advantage to take over my thoughts. Glissa was going to be the latest in a long line of decks around legendary cards I’ve built and there was nothing in the world that was going to stop me, not even me. Today I’ll take you along on the journey from The Pile of Possibilities to sixty cards. Continue reading
